Castelo dos Governadores is an iconic example of Moorish architecture. You will find it in the southeast of Lagos, behind the hospital.

After the reconquering of Portugal (13th century), the Military Government of Algarve established its headquarters in the area until the 14th century.

History goes that the unfortunate and evangelic Dom Sebastião attended an open-air mass and spoke to the noblemen gathered here from a small Manueline window of the castle just before leading them to a devastating defeat in Alcazarquivir (Morocco).
