Chapel of Our Lady of Remedios, Peniche

Nossa Senhora dos Remédios © Vitor OliveiraThe chapel of Our Lady of Remedios is located near the shore, on the western extreme of the Peniche peninsula in Portugal.
This temple constitutes the base of a sanctuary dedicated to the Marian cult. Its building date remains unknown but it’s believed to have been during the XVI century.
According to the legend, the image of Our Lady was found in the XII century hidden in a small cavern, located on the same place where the church is nowadays located.
The importance of this cult is so huge that it justifies annual pilgrimages. From this temple we highlight the major chapel, where you can worship the image of Our Lady of Remedios, as well as the blue tiles from the XVIII with episodes of Christ assion and the so called Dead Man chapel where locals worship an image of Christ known as the Lord of Remedios.
