Figueira da Foz, located in the mouth of the Mondego River, is a beautiful city of the Littoral Beira that has become one of the most famous beach towns in Portugal.

This reputation has been developed from the 19th century, when upper-class families came here for its therapeutic “sea baths”. It is specially famous for its large fine-grained sand, quite frequented in summer by Portuguese and foreigners. Furthermore, the area is also highly visited by surfers, especially the city of Buarcos.

Its casino is well-known also, offering a great number of shows during summer nights.

The city does not have a great numbers of monuments, but they are great quality ones, like the Dr. Santos Rocha Municipal Museum, visible in the city and its vicinity.

You can start your trip in the Municipal Garden. Not far from here is the market and the Igreja de São Julião Church.

It is worth visiting the Casa do Paço House, a 17th century building with a magnificent interior full of interesting tiles collections.

Inland, around the Santa Catalina Fort (16th century), there is a maze of streets where tourism is concentrated, with accommodations, good restaurants and the casino.

It also stands out the Sotto Mayor Palace, French in style, surrounded by the nice Abadias Park.

The beach urbanization reaches Buarcos, an old tiny 3 kilometres village to the North of the city.
