The Forte de Santiago Fort rises next to the Praia de Sesimbra Beach, offering excellent views over the bay.

This fortress is considered as one of the most magnificent buildings of the region due to its impressive structure and its historical military importance.

The Forte de Santiago was erected under the command of D. João IV to protect the coastal line. It was built over an ancient fortification that had been damaged by pirates attacks.

Inside the fort, you’ll have the chance to contemplate the old dungeons, private chapel, cistern, headquarters and the governor’s house.
