The Grutas da Moeda (Grottoes of Moeda) are located in São Mamede, in Batalha, just 3 minutes far from Fátima.

These grottoes were discovered in 1971. Inside them, you will find a place of great natural beauty with galleries crowded with numerous limestone formations.

Its scientific and touristic interest galleries can nowadays be visited. Each one of the rooms and galleries has been dubbed like Lago da Felicidade Lake, Sala do Presépio Hall, Pasto, Vermelha Vault, Maritime, Flawed Chapel, Pasto, Cascata, Abódada Vermelha and Fountain of Lágrimas. The open-to-the-public area of the grotto comprises 350 metres, being 45 metres deep.

The legend goes that long time ago, a rich man who was walking in the forest with a bag full of gold was assaulted by some thieves. When he tried to run away, he fell down a deep ravine with the coveted coins. After that, the place was named the Algar das Moedas Cave.
