The Igreja de Santa Maria Church is located beside the Castelo de Estremoz and it was built in the 16th c. thanks to the Infante D. Henrique (future King of Portugal between 1578 and 1580) and the King Sebastião (1557-1578). The church enjoys a Mannerist style and counts with a chão facade style with Mannerist elements and a squared floor which was part of the old citadel.

On its inside some primitive paintings of the Portuguese school are exhibited, specially in the sacristy, decorated with a beautiful marble paves.

This church underwent a big restoration between 1969 and 1970 and it has also been restored recently.
