The township of Palmela is located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, built into the region of Setúbal (Costa Azul), belonging one part of its territory to the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado, and the other to the Natural Park of Arrábida.

This area is important due to its marvelous landscape and architectural complex, which is built along high-slope hills.

Palmela is crowned by the Cavaleiros da Ordem de Santiago da Espada Castle, which nowadays is catalogued as National Monument and it has a Pousada.
