Be surprised by Pico Island, and its peak, the highest mountain in Portugal.

The Pico Island, the second largest island in the Azores Archipelago, is dominated by the 2,351 metres height Pico, the highest one in Portugal. On winter, its peak dyes white, and from the plane to reach the island you will see how it mysteriously raises above the clouds, as a appearance in the middle of the ocean.

In the high plateau which reaches the top you will find various volcanic-in-origin lagoons and the largest protected area of the Azores, with endemic and autochthonous flora.

The landscape of Pico has typical vineyards characteristics, modelled with great effort over the lava, reason to be declared World Heritage by UNESCO since 2004.

This island is characterized by its black and green lands with lots of mills and squared plots that contrast with its three lively maritime villages. Two of them, Lajes and São Roque share out the facilities of the regional museum dedicated to the whalers; while the city of Madalena dedicates its centre to wine.

Nowadays, Pico and Faial Islands are the best ones for cetacean sighting. In fact, the island has numerous companies which offer trips for dolphins and sperm whales sighting.

To discover this island it is recommendable a minimum stay of two days and rent a car or make a tour by taxi. A taxi circuit along the island costs around 100€.

A good time to visit the island is during August, since from the 5th to the 7th take place the festivities of Bon Jesus Milagroso, considered as the second greatest religious celebrations of Azores. During the second week of August are celebrated the Festas dos Baleeiros.

The 22nd July are celebrated the festivities of Santa María Madalena with a regatta and fireworks; and on the last weekend of July the Cais ones. Other interesting festivities are the Festas da Vendimia, taking place in the second week of September, when ethnographic elements are combined with others more typical from the festivities.
