The Bairro Alto of Coímbra was for a long time a Moorish settlement, and one of its heritages was the monumental arch, which currently is a picturesque way to access the city. The arch is considered to be one of the most visited attractions of Coímbra, and it is the perfect starting point for a tour of the city.

This was the main door on the Medieval wall. The oldest part of the door dates from the 9th century and it is made of two towers linked by an arch.

It is currently totaled by a Medieval tower which hosts the historical Museu da Cidade Muralhada (Fortified City Museum), where it is exhibit a plaster reproduction of the old outline of Coímbra’s old city with its castle.

The museum also counts with an audio-visual multilingual reproduction which exposes the history of many other towers which were also part of the Coímbra walls.

From the upper floor of the tower you will have fantastic views of the city; but the funniest is to look down by the matações, huge cut holes on the ground, through which hot oil was thrown to burn the enemies.
