More than 400 years old, the São Francisco de Mértola Convent is located on the other shore of the Ribeira de Oeiras, in the outskirts of Mértola, in Alentejo, Portugal.

This old convent was turned into an excellent botanic garden with an art gallery.

The garden, crowded with herbs, plants and uncommon flowers, is watered thanks to an Islamic irrigation system.

It should be emphasized the modern art works adorning the old chapel and the kinetic installations by the artist Christiaan Zwanikken.
