Velas is a village in the city of São Jorge Island , located between impressive defiles from where you will get beautiful panoramic views.

This village, settled around its port, is sheltered from the Northern winds. It has a coastal volcano known as Morro Grande, where the Ermita de la Senhora do Livramento Shrine raises.

From it is worth visiting its sports marina (Caravelas Port), with its Sea Gate, dating from 1799, which is an entrance of the place; the Conceição Fort, dating from the 17th century and not very effective during the 1708 assault; the Igreja de São Jorge Church, a religious 16th century building with three naves and an altar donated by the king Don Sebatião, with the nearby Religious Art Museum; the 18th century Igreja da Conceição, located inside a former convent, with its three naves with Baroque altars and Indoportuguese images; the Cultural Centre, a modern edification emulating the structure of a ship in which interior is located an auditorium, a cinema, a library and a conference room; the natural pools of Poça dos Frades; the República Garden, exhibiting on its centre a beautiful bandstand seat painted in white and red, and it is flanked by an eclectic 1894 house on one side, and on the other by the City Council, a Baroque emblazoned solar dating from the 17th century and which exhibits an interesting facade with three orders of Solomonic columns; the botanic garden with ecoterca, and the Miradouro da Ribeira do Almeida Viewpoint, located just one kilometre to the centre, from where it is offered a magnificent panoramic view over the whole city, with Pico Island in the background.

In the vicinity of the city stand out places such as the Ermita de la Senhora do Livramento Shrine, which can be accessed from the centre through an avenue; the Entre-Morros Bay, which is in the hole of a volcanic crater, and where it is located the ethnographic park with a windmill; and the city of Beira, where the Laticinios Farming Cooperative Union is, where the São Jorge cheese certificates are given (allowed visits from 9:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00.

Regarding leisure, this city acquires a lively environment during the Cultural Week Festivities, from the 2nd to the 8th July, where there are cuisine tasting stands, but also outdoor concerts and sports competitions. Summer nights are also very lively, since Velas hosts discos, pubs, bars and karaoke.
