The locality of Santa Cruz preserves a calmed environment during the whole year, despite the air traffic of the nearby Santa Catarina Airport. This fishing village still has numerous Manueline monuments from the first years of colonization.

In the main square, located in the centre of a beautiful public garden, stands the Igreja de São Salvador Church, from 1533. This church is flanked by a bell tower with a pyramidal roof, and its inside has a painted roof. It hosts a metal funeral plaque in honor of João Freitais.

On the other side of the square is found the Câmara Municipal (town hall), which has some gorgeous Manueline windows.

Its parish church dates from 1749 and is the oldest one in Madeira. Its similarity with the Catedral do Funchal Cathedral suggests that it was possibly designed by the same architect.

In the Rua da Ponta Nova is located the Palácio da Justiça (the Courthouse), built in the 19th century, with its splendid verandas and its stone staircase. This palace is surrounded by a park which is shadowed by beautiful flowering trees.

Two blocks South, there is a maritime promenade with palms and dragon trees that give it a dignified air. There you can find cafés, the town market, a public library with an art gallery, and an open-air theatre; without forgetting the aquatic centre with various pools.

Next to this city is also found the amusing Aquapark, the only aquatic park in Madeira.
