The Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirõ (Baleia Factory) is one of the most important buildings dedicated to whaling. It was built to take advantage from whales’ oil, which was the first great industry and one of the main economical activities of the island.
The first works in the factory date back from 1944, an age marked by whaling global boom.
Nowadays this building hosts the Centro Ambiental e Cultural da Fábrica da Baleia do Boqueirão Environmental and Cultural Centre, which allows inhabitants to relive their memories and works as an interpretative centre with a didactic and pedagogic perspective.
