Capelas is an unfocused village, with a marine character, which recalls its past whaling tradition from a flashy monument, and it is located in the Western side of the São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal.

This village is ideal to wander by its picturesque places, and admire calmly the pier with the beating of the waves in the cliffs.

From this city it is worth to visit its marine neighbourhood, the Miradouro de Pedras Negras Overlook located above the pier, the eighteenth century solar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Santa Rita, the old vigilance whalers stands and the beautiful gardened square, with the bandstand, a 1895 fountain, a whalers monument, which is made of two men with a cetacean at their feet; and the Mother Church.

Between Capelas and Ribeira Grande is located the only plain area of the island, made of big lava straining which descent from the Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Provoação and Nordeste volcanoes, which had generated two united islands around 50,000 years ago.

A few kilometres eastern, the city of Fenais da Luz counts with the Ponta das Calhetas Pike, where little boats are sheltered. From this tiny village is worthy visiting a stone mansion with traditional furniture which hosts a Museological Centre, available for visiting from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00; and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz Church.
