Lagoa do Fogo is located in the centre of the luss São Miguel Island, in the Azores archipelago. It is the second largest island, and the highest. It was listed in 1974 as Natural Reserve due to its immense natural and cultural heritage.

This vast lagoon has an extension of 1360 hectares and is located in the caldera of a dormant volcano formed 15,000 years ago. The volcano is believed to have been the origin of the Serra de Água da Pau.

he lagoon surprises the newcomers by its natural beauty and its sheer size.

It’s considered one of the most important natural attractions of Azores. The lagoon is surrounded by high mountains and lush endemic vegetation transmitting peace and tranquility. The waters are crystal clear and there are a small peninsula and white sand beaches.

In the nearby area, there are many great hiking trails, such as Lombardas Lagoa do Fogo, where you can see interesting fauna and flora; or the other one surrounding the lagoon, that departs from the part known as “2º Mirador” and goes on for eight kilometers, around three hours in length. It crosses forest areas with endemic vegetation such as “cedro do mato” and laurel, offering many different perspectives over the lagoon. Towards the north, half-way to the caldera, you will find Caldeira Velha, another amazing place with lush vegetation and a natural pool under a waterfall of thermal hot waters you shouldn’t miss.
