The Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, located just 1 kilometres far from Vila Franca do Campo, in the Southern coast of São Miguel Island, is one of the compulsory tours for everyone who is visiting the Azores.

 

This island, which belongs to a little coast volcano, counts with a circular crater of 150 metres of diameter which currently has become an excellent natural pool with few scaled, and warm water.

To arrive to it you can take one of the ships which depart several times a day from Vila Nova do Campo. The price is around 2€.

The current morphology of this ilhéu is the result of the marine erosion over a volcanic cone.
Its crater forms an idyllic circular bay almost circular with 150 metres of diameter, which communicates with the sea by a little channel.

Since its discovery, in 1537, this island has served for different purposes, such as military fort, port, whale vigilance station, cultivation area, etc. In 1983, after an indiscriminate use, emerged the necessity of protecting its natural and landscape interest, and it was classified as natural reservation, then when you will visit it you will have to utmost respect its flora and fauna.

In this island you will find natural Macaronesian forests of beeches and heathers, just as numerous vegetables species. The island also turns out to be an excellent area for the sighting of marine birds, since on it nest species such as Sterna hirundo, or common tern, and Calonectris diomedea borealis.

The depths of the inside bay of the island is made up by rock partially covered in sand.

The best time to visit it is from June to September, since it is when are guaranteed the boats which will make the trips.
